Default medela swing essentials or maxi?

hi, posting on the run so hoping I've got the right section.

needing to get a pump pretty quick so happy to just buy what we need.

I've heard the medela swing is the pump of choice for a lot of mums so happy to go with that but wondering whether I go for the essentials or maxi?

have been hand expressing but need more and in a more efficient way. bub is a bit jaundiced and sleepy so we've been told to keep expressing as he's not feeding that efficiently (my supply is great btw) and we need to get more food into him. also been told to top up with formula over the next 24 hours.

    so - essentials or maxi?

    thanks ladies xx

Spectra 9. Otherwise medela swing essentials is great.

Tho why top up if you have great supply???? That's really odd and incorrect advice. As you've said your supply is great but bub is probably too sleepy and tired to feed directly from the boob (too much work). You can pump and cup feed. My SIL did this with her baby who had jaundice.

    thanks for the advice.

yes I've been hand expressing and getting good amounts which we've been syringe feeding to him after boob feeds to top up and ensure he's getting a bit more.

she said the formula is mainly for the hydration as the jaundice is making him a bit sleepy/lazy.

OK. That's just really odd advice. Cos BM is way more absorbent and hydrating. Ask the milk Meg on fb. She is an ILBC.

Sorry but that's a bizarre one.

Good luck. Sunshine will help too.

I'll check in with a LC too just to get a second opinion.

yup we took him outside before for a few minutes of sunshine too.

poor little bug, I just want him to be in full good health!

    thanks for your advice x

Agree with R&A&H on bm over formula if your not having any issues. BM is far more rapidly absorbed than formula - which may upset his little tummy and cause wind, reflux or constipation (if the first one you try doesn't suit).

When DS2 was 8 months old he got gastro and I was told by Dr and nurse health line not to worry about anything but BM because it is absorbed rapidly and all nutrients are immediately bio available.

Keep up the good work mumma 😊

thanks hun. we're just worried sick and it's hard to know what advice to take and what to ignore.

we did the 20-30ml of formula just to get some fluids into him, in addition to what I'd hand expressed before.

will buy a pump after we get his bilirubin blood test done now and hopefully we can get him back on track.

he's so sleepy, it's so stressful.

It's OK it's understandable why you are stressed.
about 30% of babies born in Asia have jaundice. It's very common.

You are a wonderful mama. Just remember that.

One of mine was jaundiced (terrible I can't even remember which one!) and we weren't told to top up with anything. I was told to breastfeed on demand and feed often.

It did pass very quickly and before I knew it I had a baby that wouldn't go to sleep at all!

Hope you get some clarity on this. Very stressful when it's your first.
