If my kids (5 and 3) were in the room I definitely would have spoken up. They hear everything at the moment and I would need them to know that that language is not acceptable.

I have some youngish staff in my business that I have pulled up repeatedly for saying 'gay' in place of 'lame'. Totally not on, they don't dare say it now.

Edit - just noticed you said kids in bed sorry.

Same. If that was my fathers opinion so be it.

Being family, and older family at that, I'd probably not be too serious, and just lightheartedly say "what on earth is a f@ggot hair cut?" and explain that gay people don't actually have certain haircuts and that anyone can cut and style their hair the way they like.

This. I don't think arguing with an old, set in his ways man is going to actually get anywhere. As much as I find the word offensive I don't think calling him out would actually achieve anything.

To be honest I would probably ignore it. Most people of advanced years are set in their ways and opinions and nothing I say is going to change that. I suppose I could say please don't say stuff like that in my house, but in general I'm a peace keeper and I couldn't be bothered with the confrontation or resulting argument.

As for what you did, I'd say you told him that was offensive and not appropriate or allowed in your home.

I'd probably just shake my head and ask what exactly is a fa.g haircut.

If my kids were in the room, if chastise the adult and say that it's not to be said in front of them.

My dad wouldn't say anything like that but if he did, I would say something.

Oh that's a good point- if I had kids old enough to understand who had heard what he'd said I would probably make much more of a fuss about it- not to change his mind, but to demonstrate to my kids that that sort of language is never acceptable.

It not something my dad would say but if by some weird circumstances he did.
I would have probably have said 'really dad'? In a 'what the' way
