Default Would this annoy you a little?

My parents have a much loved ageing Labrador and a little before Xmas they got a Labrador puppy as well.

Since the new dog has arrived, my mum has taken to referring to both dogs as ‘the kids’. A lot.

My DH got confused a couple of times on Xmas day when mum said things like ‘have the kids eaten yet?’ as he naturally thought she was talking about my brother and I!

I’m thinking, the dogs are not your kids, we are your kids. If the dogs are your kids, what does that make us now?!

This is petty, I know, but it does bug me. Seems like every time I talk to my mum on the phone she’ll mention the dogs as the kids and then always follow with “that’s what I call them, the kids”.

Would this slightly grind your gears?

*Please note, this is specific to my situation and in no way a dig at childless people who consider their pets to be their children*

I wouldn't be annoyed but I do refer to my dogs and cats as my fur babies and sometimes as my kids lol. If I'm telling the dogs to go find dp I do refer to him as dad lol
So I'm one of the nope wouldn't bother me at all people lol

Nope wouldn't bother me but I'm the worst for humanising my dogs. I have two labs also and always talk to them about getting a new baby sister (due in 4 weeks). I also call them my daughters and refer to my mum as their Nanna so yeh I'm probably at the extreme end of the dog loving group

This wouldn't bother me at all. Your mum has an empty nest, let her rebuild company, meaning and joy in her life however she sees fit.

Just think when you're old you might want to seek company in something whether it be a pet or Bingo. Having people smile and let you be would feel better than people thinking you had lost your marbles.

    (I'm a pet lover )

Wouldn't faze me in the slightest. I'm a bit puzzled why it bothers you so much TBH.

Personally it wouldn't bother me (my cats are my babies too lol) but I can understand why it makes you uncomfortable.

Disclaimer. .. I love dogs. I have dogs...
But I'm like you OP... I don't refer to my dog as a 'kid' and I it would annoy me a bit. Like its a petty thing but would still annoy me. Lol.
My in laws refer our dog as their 'furry grand daughter' and I think it's kinda ridiculous. They have a grand daughter..She's a human being! !
And they totally treat my dog like a human. I'm not one for humanising pets.

Her nest isn't quite empty, my brother lives downstairs!

I think I'll probably regret posting this thread . I can't justify my annoyance, it's just one of those little things.

It would annoy me. Then again, I'm not much of a pet person. I have a cat, but think of her as a cat, not a fur baby.
