Default Moving to melbourne - school zone guarantee?

    Hi all,

Just wondering what happens if you move into a different high school zone later in the year - when the application date is usually May sometime I think?

If it's the closest school to our residence, are we guaranteed a place for our daughter? She'll be going into Year 7 in 2017, and moving in to a different school zone in late 2016.

Do they have to accept her, or not if they've already exceeded/met quota? And then we have to look elsewhere??

    Thanks
    Narelle

Generally you can contact the school that will be in the zone you are moving to and talk to them about it, schools can accept students from other zones at their discretion, a friend of mine is president of a school board and he said they can't actually stop other zoned students from enrolling if you wanted to
Kick up a stink about it. Best bet is contact the new school and tel them you plan to move there can you do your enrolment now and they may be happy to accept anyway

If it's your zoned school then they have to accept you.

Our public school in NSW said that if you move into the zone, they have to accept you even if you enrol the day before they go back! I'd expect it to be the same in VIC too.

They have to accept you if you are in their zone. The only way they can refuse is if they have exceeded their quota and applied for (and received) a special dispensation to close applications. This is very rare though. My school went from 3 prep classes one year to 6 the next because we had such a huge over subscription after all the new buildings were completed!

Thank you the responses, and so quick

That does give me some reassurance, I've just been reading articles in the media about how the schools are overflowing in Melbourne, and kids are turned away even if in the zone. That's worrying, but may be just a fuss/beat up.

    Thanks

Whereabouts in Melbourne? If you are in the zone they are supposed to take you. If you aren't zoned for a school like us the closest school as the crow flies is supposed to take you but we have been advised that they won't.

Please check with the school. It all depend on the school and demand. Some school would not guarantee a place even if you move at the beginning of the year due to high demand and quota.
