Default What is happening!! *trigger warning*

Yesterday a man kills himself and his two young children in South Australia.

Today a man kills his grandchild and attempts to kill himself, his wife and his daughter in Queensland.

What on earth is going on with this!

It's so sad and it's exactly why we need to take mental health treatment more seriously. By 'we' I mean our government.

There needs to be even more support out there for people with mental illness to stop tragic events like these happening, which means more funding for more awareness and assistance for patients.

Those poor babies. I saw a newspaper at work with the 2 bubbas who died in the water and they were so gorgeous. Had tears in my eyes.

I agree there needs to be more done in terms of mental health. That will be a hard slog though and won't be fool proof. In the short-medium term in sorry to say I think the government needs to make it much easier to keep kids away from disturbed parents.

I think we often under estimate how stressful the Christmas/new year period can be. I wonder if it can be the last straw in some cases?

    So sad đŸ˜¥

Are we sure it's mental health and not just horrible men who want to hurt their families???

That dad who drowned his kids.... Was there a custody dispute?? In the past 5 years how many dads have killed their kids? That Westgate dad comes to mind, Luke batty is another.

My heart goes to those poor family members who are having to live thru this carnage.

i have no answer, not even able to get my head around it all. it is just so terribly sad. people who have anxiety, and depression, they should just shut themselves off from all the news in the world. it is too much to deal with. I spend a lot of my time just praying, I cant do much else, but I truly pray constantly. hugs, marie.

It is devastating. Mental health facilities are exceptionally hard to access in rural SA, which unfortunately I know for a fact.

What really irks me though is the difference between people's responses when a male does this and when a female does this.

The female is almost exclusively blamed and I think it's because we have this cognitive dissonance between the nurturing mother and a mother who could be violent. It just doesn't make sense to most of us. People are reviled and think she must be an evil monster.

The social media comments on the Port Lincoln tragedy generally assumed a separation, custody battle, family court failure, or, more times than I care to count, that he was 'driven' to this by his wife.

Hang on, it's always the woman's fault? Bull$hit. I have had mental illness for most of my life. It is not an excuse.

So yes, it's a devastating, tragic event. I have compassion for his suffering. I am sorry that for whatever reason he didn't get the help he needed and that depression broke him in the end.

But the coverage of this man who murdered his children as 'a good bloke' leaves an awful taste in my mouth. This is the worst act of domestic violence.
