So next year I should have enough points for a return ticket to Fiji. Have you cashed in points? Was it easy to book non point tickets at the same time?

I have looked but haven't booked. You have to do it waaaaaaaay in advance and no chance during peak times.

I have cashed them in and used them to pay for part of a flight. I think It was during a sale too. If you log on and go to book it will tell you if you can use them.

not virgin but I have done other frequent flyer ones before (qantas/singapore etc) - it is easy enough.
You do often have limited tickets available but I have bought in peak times before with no issues.
be careful though as I have found that the fuel surcharge still makes the fares relatively expensive.
I have found it better to get shopping vouchers with the points and just buy super economy tickets
