Default Nearly 3 weeks pp period? Tmi

I was on haemorrhage watch in hospital due to ragged membranes.
Since leaving I've had several gushes of bright red bleeding on different occasions that's soaked pads ( every few days- nothing between) . At 16 days pp my midwife advised its not normal and there may still be retained product and If it still is there by week 4 I'll need a scan.
Well overnight ( 17 days pp) I had a little gush and 1/4 pad filled with red blood, and today ( 18 pp) I have a little more bright red bleeding.
How do I tell the difference between a period returning and abnormal pp bleeding?

Period returning will be gradual and constant. No gushing. It sounds like retained placenta to me your symptoms. Does it follow a bf session?
