I worked as a checkout operator and supervisor for a few years when I was a student. We didn't get briefed specifically on this, in fact we didn't really get any training on dealing with rude or agro customers. Some customers can be really intimidating, when I was 15 I had a lady yell at me because I put a packet of something in the same bag as tinned food. Luckily a lovely customer behind her told her to calm down and then told me not to worry about cranky old ladies with nothing better to do but yell at people!

Did they pay together or separate. My thought if someone did that was they would have been putting it through as one sale.

@Little Ted we were told to use our judgement. I would, frequently, ignore the person who shoved in, and serve the others. If they got ratty, I would call a manager over, explain that they weren't in the queue and I didn't want to get groceries mixed up. The manager would lead them away to another queue.

Yep rude for sure. I probably wouldn't have said anything untill he touched my groceries. Then I would probably say something simple like "excuse me" or "you right there" before even thinking.

I would have wanted to say "Well excuse the ***** out of me".
I don't know if I would have ACTUALLY said it, though.

Definitely rude. I would have said something along the lines of "excuse me, I was next". I'm not a rude person, but if I was having a bad day I could possibly say something a bit more passive aggressive haha. I can't believe the checkout chick/dude didn't say anything! When I was working retail in a pharmacy we had people try and push in all the time. All I would do was make eye contact and say, "Excuse me Sir/Ma'am, this lady/gentleman was next, then reach out my hand to take whatever item the person who was next in line was buying. I wouldn't engage in a conversation with them. Only once I had a bloke go off his nut at me for that, but I just let him fume away while I served the already waiting customers. Apparently his need to buy 5 x $1 boxes of tissues was far greater than that of the people buying actual medication. Ah well.

Extremely rude. I likely would have been way too chicken to actually say anything though.

Rude rude rude! And I definitely would've said something. I am not someone you want to jump in front of lol. We were at a theme park once and had been queuing for about 30mins for a ride. There were signs everywhere saying that queue jumping was not acceptable and offenders would be removed. Still a group of older teen boys decided that it didn't apply to them and ducked under several barriers to shove themselves in front of me. I queried it with them and was basically told where to go... So I smiled and waited the extra 40mins or so it took to get to the front of the queue and then informed the ride attendants what had happened. The people behind me backed me up and the attendant made the boys go straight out through the exit lol I later saw them being escorted from the park :-)
