I know! After this thread started, I went to my MIL's place to check their nearly forty year old copies. Berenstain. I would've bet my kids it was Berenstein.

I get that E and A are obviously close thus why it was confused but why by so many?? All us 80's kids swear black and blue it was stein. Why? One or two people can be easily explained by why do pretty much everyone in our generation think it's stein?

When this thread first started I thought pfffftt, it's stein guys. I mean I was a kid in this era. I google and yerp, it's stain. WTAF?

I bet it's more to do with how it's was pronounced to us when read to us as children, and how we subsequently pronounced it, rather than us actually having read 'stein.' Know what I mean?

Eta: now I need to watch a YouTube clip of an old episode to see how they say it!!!

This episode's from 1986, I can't be bothered watching the whole thing but don't think they say it...😞. Now I'm going to google for an interview of the authors, I'm determined to know!

For some reason, when I was a kid, I couldn't pronounce it either way, so I used to call them the Berstan Bears.

This thread is tripping me out! Its always been Stein to me.... stain just looks so wrong. And for some reason dilemna looks so damn right its wrong. I'm notoriously bad at spelling and if I was asked to spell it out loud I'd have no clue but i was sure there was an n in there somewhere 😂 also the reba McEntire thing on that link, mum (a huge reba fan) and I both swore it was McIntyre.

Just saw on news Obama and bear gyrills "just met up" in Alaska. Didn't that happen ages ago
