Yes you can take carry on plus a handbag. Their carry on allowance has changed to 7kgs now.

So, I can have the bag near my feet?
Lucky for us we booked before the change and can carry 10kg, but I doubt we would each anyway.

Yes you can have it near your feet. I've had one at my feet for every flight I've been on.

Yep u can have a handbag and put at feet. On full flights they usually tell u too. I've flown international and interstate and always had handbag plus carry on.

You can have a main bag plus one small item to go at your feet.
A handbag, umbrella, jacket - are all considered ONE item.
So you couldn't have a main bag for carryon, a handbag and an umbrella.
They all have to weigh less than the max weight limit combined. So if your handbag is 5kg, your carryon luggage can only be 5kg max also
They are really cracking down on this and weighed EVERYONES bags on a half empty flight to Townsville we took recently. Ppl who went over limit were charged there and then with a fee.
Luckily- we were travelling with ds and his bag didn't weigh much. So I put my handbag with his at weighing time. Otherwise my bags combined would been way over.
It's easy to get 5kg from a handbag- camera, bottles, water, snacks and the iPad for dd. It adds up quickly.

Other than purse, tickets, mobile phone etc in my handbag, do we need carry on if everything fits in the suitcase?

You don't need a carry on if everything fits in your other bag. I would take one to distract my kids with stuff but I don't know how old your kids are, they may not need anything.

I always take a spare change of clothes with me as carry on for each person. Split food, vomits and poo-namis plus lost baggage can all happen.
wifey of hubby who is always away. mother of two girls who are always amusing.
