Hmm, that's probably an important bit @harvs. Mostly Internet, some Apps for the kids, photos and some specialised farming software.

    Default iPad help!

The software is designed for iPad so that bit is covered.

I have wifi at home so I'm assuming that I don't need cellular.

Dh isn't keen on refurbished, and given I need to buy tomorrow I might struggle to find one. New just seems so much easier.

If you have wifi at home it will work at home. If you want it work in hospital or in the paddock than you need cellular or a dongle. Go with the same telephone company that has the best phone coverage in the paddock.

Or you can just hotspot off your phone, i do this all the time.
For a 32 GB iPad Air you are probably looking at around $550.
I would load it up at home (using your home wifi) with movies, apps, books, those specialised farming apps you mentioned and take it into him. He can use his phone to hotspot to check emails in the ipad or browse the internet on the ipad if he needs to etc.

We're not near home at the moment so I can't load at home, once I've got it I'll be taKing it straight to the hospital so will have to get a dongle. Dh's phone is ancient and can't even get the Internet on it.

Just be careful hot spot in you can go over data limit super quick if start watching something online. It always tuns the battery down on your phone fast too. Lessons learnt the hard way when d's played with the pad when i was hot spotting.
