I would really be annoyed if someone who was staying with me (or even just visiting) damaged property then just ignored it and acted like it never happened. Yes your MIL might be completely weird about her tiles but you said you damaged it so really you should fix it, or at least tell her and say you will try fixing it and if that doesn't work replace the one tile if your MIL is that upset about the little chip.
I'm surprised I am in the minority here...does respecting other people's property stop because it's the mil? I'm confused.
I spilt nail polish on my mil's rug and as soon as she got home I offered to buy her a new rug if I couldn't get the stain out. It took me 30 min scrubbing and it came out. I could never imagine damaging her property then pretending like it wasnt me...esp if I knew she was particularly precious about it.

I think you need to tell her. It is the right thing to do. If she carries on you could always point out that the tiles are clearly not suited to their application.

Just be all "your tile has an itty bitty chip in it, we know how much your tiles mean to you, so if you want to disown us, we completely understand. in fact... We insist that you never talk to us again.

If you were renting,
Wouldn't this also count as normal wear and tear?
I guess that is why I dont see the huge deal or need to point it out.
It wasn't done out of negligence or misusing something
It occurred out of living life in a resonable manner.

I would tell her because it would eat at me. I could barely see it in the picture, so hopefully she doesn't react too badly. They may be expensive tiles though
