I'd ask what they come up as on your bank statement. Not all companies come up as their business name.
Then ask how you got a receipt for a transaction that wouldn't go through on a declined card. Then speak to the manager. I'd pay if I hadn't, but still speak to the manager about their staffs attitude.

Default WWYD - to pay or not to pay

I would E) take the shirt back and tell them they can keep everything, if they're going to be snarky then you won't be spending any more money with their business.

I would be asking them to check their bank reconciliation for the day! If they had put it through the register but it hadn't processed on their EFT then their banking would be out for that particular day.

I think I'd return everything as I have a guilty conscience (and believe in karma) and complain to management/head office.

This! In writing, addressed to the manager and with a copy sent to head office if it's a chain. It's a problem with their system or staff training that they processed a declined transaction. It's not surprising you didn't notice given they didn't say anything at the time and gave you a receipt. I wouldn't have paid (again) without first checking my own records either, regardless of their attitude. You were obviously not being dishonest, as you say you presented them with the evidence. They could have handled it so much better and maintained goodwill.

This. Id take it back and tell them to stuff it and that you won't be shopping there. Unless the shirt had been worn and only then would be paying for it.

I would go back & pay for the shirt. Regardless of the service you received, you haven't paid for the item. I would never shop lift & not paying for the shirt would be stealing.

I would return the shirt and put in a official complaint.

Honestly I would either keep the free tee or contact head office (if it's a chain store) full them in. They will be mortified over initial stuff up and then follow up. They won't charge you for tee I dint imagine.

And clearly their sales register would have been out when they tried to reconcile that night. Did the person fudge the books to hide from manager/head office.

Not necessarily, it the sale didnt go through the stock would just be out. Its the same as walking out the front door with it- no money has changed hands.
