Default Boy name same as guy friend

    Hi all.

I'm keeping my baby's gender a surprise and I'm having a seriously hard time short-listing a boy's name...I can only think of about 2-3 boys names I like and the one I'm leaning towards is the same name as one of my long-term guy friends who is an awesome mate. I like the name independent of my friendship with this guy. He moved interstate a few years ago so I only see him about once a year now.

Do you think it would be a bit NQR to name your child the same name as a guy in your friendship circle? I wouldn't be naming it after him, it's just a coincidence as I like the name and only realised after I thought of it as a potential baby name that it was my mate's name.

I'm thinking it's probably ok considering I hardly see him anymore and my son's name and life would soon dominate the name meaning for me before too long.

    Would your DH/DP object?

I couldn't do it. I have a long term male friend who I haven't seen for ages and don't really talk to anymore, who lives interstate. There is no way I could name my child the same name. DH, my family, and my friends know the name of my friend and no matter what I said it would truly look like I'd named my son after him. Way too weird and awkward.

And yes, DH would object. Just as I would if DH wanted to name our daughter the same name as one of his long time female friends.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. DH wouldn't object, and we actually considered the name of one of my male friend for our DS.

I don't see the weirdness and these questions wouldn't even have come to my mind.

Is there more to the story? Just wondering as to why your DH could object?

No there's definitely no more to the story where this friend is concerned (no romantic history or feelings at all).

I only wonder how I would feel if our chosen girl's name was the same name as one of DP's female friends. I told him the only reason I wouldn't want to use our girl's name was if he had an ex with that name...but if it was a girl mate he rarely sees it probably wouldn't bother me.

Scores are level! I'm keen to read more responses. Thanks for your replies.

I really liked a name that was also the name of one of dh's mates. Dh objected. His reasoning was that there are plenty of other names and we should choose one that isn't in our lives.
I did have other boys names that I liked, so it wasn't a big deal for me but I would push a bit harder if I really wanted that name.

Hmm I don't know. I feel funny about using any name someone in the family or friends had or used though. If you don't see him that often though, it's probably not really that much of an issue. If you saw him all the time I think it would be a bit.....odd? IDK what I'm trying to say haha! A friend of ours used the girls name we liked, so I scratched that off our list as I feel weird about using it too. It's a tough one!

Personally I wouldn't. I loved the name Claire for a middle name but DP's best mates wife is named that so I decided against it.

I would still use it. I don't see what's weird about it?

I would definitely use it, especially if it is a name that is well-known eg: Jack, Thomas etc. If it were a really unusual name, it could be a bit awkward.

It's a really nice and well-known name that has been constantly used for the past 40 years...like Thomas, Daniel, James etc.
    Not unusual at all.
