Default Stopping someone from direct debiting

Can you stop an individual from direct debiting from you for a service they are not providing?

Can i call the bank and get them
To put a stop on it??

Yep! Call your bank ASAP and they can put a stop on it immediately.

How did you set up the direct debit? Through the individual or the bank? When I worked at a major bank we would only stop debits that had been set up through us.

Also, individuals direct debits can be through a 3rd party. Do you have a contract of any sort?

I tried to get one stopped a couple of years ago and the bank said they couldn't do much. Might depend on your bank & the company who is debiting the money though.

A bank can only stop direct debits set up from their end. If you have signed up for the service, there's not much the bank can do as you've agreed to the direct debits & the debits aren't fraudulent. I would contact the service provider & get them to stop them. If you have trouble, just threaten to get consumer affairs involved, that usually gets their act together quick smart.
