Default Long Term TTC chat #3

Big hugs star. I don't know what to say except I'm thinking of you

Afm. Just found out my cousins pregnant. She's been married since feb this year. I swore I'd have kids before her. Not going to happen. I just want to give up

Hi bubbles, from what I know the current ivf rates have a Medicare rebate but still a substantial out of pocket cost. For example one cycle might cost $7000 with $3000 back from Medicare so you are out of pocket $4000. There are some cheaper clinics that offer a much smaller out of pocket cost but they say in the next year or two there will be Medicare only ivf clinics. That means they only charge what the Medicare rebate will be eg. $3000 cost with $3000 from Medicare so no out of pocket costs at all. Hope that helps xx

There are some clinics like Westmead and Liverpool that only charge the gap, which is also a much smaller gap. There are around a grand up front with nothing back for a cycle with EPU (which is considered non safety net). Or do what we were going to and go safety net and pay around 2k with money back so the first cycle is dearer but then you hit safety net and additional cycles can be as cheap as $250.

It will be a wonderful day when it is essentially no out of pocket. The rich should not be the only ones who deserve children.

I don't think so I remember being part of the Liverpool thread and women were flying back and forth from Perth to Sydney for EPU then transfer and having all the u/s and testing in Perth and still coming out well ahead.

    http://thefertilitycentre.com.au/liverpool/IVF-costs

    https://www.westmeadivf.com.au/costs/

Primary IVF is the cheapest centre in Aust atm

eta Liverpool don't even have sedation for EPU (thus why so cheap) but Westmead does, so had we not fallen by Feb next year we were going Westmead.

I've heard of low cost clinics too - they don't use high doses of fertility drugs nor do they harvest as many eggs. This method has just as high success rates as conventional IVF procedures. Patients also need to be in a healthy BMI range to qualify for this treatment (from what I read about one of the clinics in Brisbane). Hope this helps.

Afm - I cancelled iui - particularly after I heard about your situation, Star. I read more about adhesions and scar tissue in the uterine cavity - I have most of the symptoms (longer and lighter periods than I use to, painful ovulation to name a few). So it would be silly of me to go down the assisted fertility treatment path without getting everything checked out first.

Yesterday was a day of babies...fare welling yet another colleague on maternity leave and catching up with friends, who recently had their first baby... But what helps DH and I get through all this is the fact that we accepted that this is our TTC journey. As hard as it was to accept at the time, it has made us openly talk about it with one another as well as friends. Our friends are still welcoming and we enjoy playing with their children even if we are the only couple out of our friends without kids.

Hang in there Star and Bubbles. Your time will come.

I go to westmead and my clinic offers a very similar service to the really expensive ones. You are put on the drug level appropriate to your circumstances even if that means really high doses and extra med support. There was no skimping on anything. The clinic is open 7 days a week for all appts and egg collections. We retrieved 18 eggs and have had a fantastic experience with them. Two of my friends have since changed from expensive clinics as they were unhappy and have really loved westmead too. We have sedation for EPU which I found worked well for me x
