    Default What are after pains?

    What are after pains? A friend visiting me in hospital asked me if I had after pains. Honestly, 3rd child and first time I have heard of them. What do they feel like?

    Just like contractions/period type pain. They can be dull or quite severe just like a full blown contraction. It's your uterus contracting back down and expelling any blood or clots. They are especially painful during or just after breast feeding due to the hormones, and usually get worse with each baby. Ouch

    It's your uterus contracting...feels like period pain but quite full on.. I used to get it in the first few days after birth whilst breast feeding.

    For me it was worst with my first kid. 2nd and 3rd the pains were bearable but no1 was quite painful.

    Ugh my after pains were the worst! I had a drug free labour but I had to have Nurofen and heat packs for days afterwards. Everytime bub feeds it releases hormones (oxytocin) that helps to contract the uterus back to it's pre-baby size.

    They are absolutely awful. I think mine were almost as bad as labour pain, especially while feeding. Count yourself lucky for not having them!!!

    Omg I'm so glad to hear this! My afterpains with ds were unbearable for the first day, so much i had to unlatch him. Everyone says it gets worse each time so its good to hear that isnt necessarily true. Did you do anything different with 2 & 3?

    That was me too, for second delivery. During my third the midwife said 'we're almost there, almost done' and I snapped back 'it is not!!! I'll be having after pains for days!!!' With the third I used magnesium gel and ginger tea, was better than the second time. I didn't really notice them first time.

    I never had them with my first 2 (much to my step mothers disgust). My third was only for a day or 2 and they were just uncomfortable, not painful.

    Number 4 however.... omfg give me full blown contractions any day!! They were hands down the worst pain I have ever felt. Didnt help either I ended up with a uterine infection which made the pain even worse.

    It feels like period pain. It is your uterus contracting back to normal size, and is worse during breast feeding. I found them much worse for baby no 2.

    I didn't have them with my first at all, my second holy hell, they were like contractions, so effing painful esp while bf
