What about using mod podge with the wrapping paper you have found?

I gave up on looking for contact paper and bit the bullet and painted it. It only cost around $10, I just got a sample pot of green paint, painted the top then put down thick black material tape, used a white-out pen for the road markers and painted some houses/ greenery. It's a bit dodgy, but I'm sure the boys won't notice!!

Aw thank you! I'm not arty at all, and usually have these wonderful visions that end up looking like poo, so I'm glad this one came out ok!

Thank you! It's turned out a hit - DS1 has been playing with it for an hour since he got home from daycare. Only took a couple of hours to do, and most of that was paint drying time!
