What an awful situation. Very very dangerous indeed and she could loose everything. Hire a PI for sure and expose this nasty piece of work.

Oh I'm so sorry that your MIL is going though this. I can imagine that would be so hard to watch someone you love get taken advantage of

Your MIL may not want to hear it, but is there a way you could gently suggest to her a cohabitation agreement or the like to protect herself.
Obviously she's in " love" so won't want to believe this man would rip her off but perhaps you could say it's not about this man specifically, just about protecting herself generally.
Good luck Op and to your MIL too

It does sound concerning and thank goodness she has someone watching out for her. What do you know about this man? Do you at least have a full name? Try google, Facebook anything. The town where is family is prominent can you contact the local library or newspaper to confirm? Where did he and MIL meet? Can you speak to anyone who can vouch for him?

Watch a show on the ABC called Catfish. You can do lots of things to find out more about him. If your gut us saying it's not right, listen to it.

If I were you I would stay out of it and let your hubby handle it. Dr Phil says it's each partners responsibility to deal with their own family.

Speaking of Dr Phil perhaps you could invite mil over then have a dr Phil episode about conmen and women on in the background. Might open up a conversation without appearing to be too agressive.

Gosh that sounds stressful. My immediate thought was that you need to get any significant family valuables out of the house before he moves in! Any chance her jewelry needs cleaning??? X

Great idea about getting her rings cleaned, I might offer this week.

I have spent hours on Google and found very little info, some of it supports his stories but it's not enough.

I can't believe he is prominent in the community because he shows no indication of it and we deliberately took him to the biggest pub/club in town and nobody looked at him or approached him to say hi.

    How they met sounds legitimate.

I'm not sure why I should just leave it to DH, we are a very close family and do everything together. MIL trusts us both in everything and I'm a better judge of character than DH.
