Default Blocked ear precursor to ear infection?

Hey iv had a cold for 2 and a half weeks which worsened again a few days ago. Iv had a productive cough for over a week (yellow and green phlegm sorry tmi) and last night one of my ears suddenly blocked and has a slight ringing to it and I can't unblock it. I have also got a very occasional stab of pain in my ear a few times today.
Is this the start of an ear infection? I haven't had one in a long long time so can't remember

It sounds like it, I had something similar and it ended up in a double ear infection, pain was severe after 2 days. I actually ended up with a ruptured ear drum as well, not fun at all, I'd see a dr soon.

It took well over a month for me to get my hearing back.

Ok so both ears are blocking popping crackling and ringing. Still only odd twinge of pain. I'm tossing up whether it's worth $70 for dr appt or not if it's not an infection I won't get anti bs blah

I would be inclined to go to the dr. I had a nasty cold a couple of weeks ago, then got a really bad blocked ear and the next day it was very achy. Went to the dr and was def an ear infection. I've nearly finished my second course of antibiotics, but the damn ear is still blocked (no pain though, so pretty sure the infection is gone).

@peanutmonkey - how have you managed a month without hearing? I am going insane already, I have the uncontrollable urge to shove a pen down my ear!

With great difficulty! Its still not back 100%, its all echoey. It made waking up to my DS3 in the middle of the night problematic. However apparently the tear in my eardrum is healing nicely so shouldnt be too much longer!
