Default School teaching with American books

I wasn't sure where to post this as always but here goes.
DS is in year 1 and he gets a reading book (photo copied/print out) sent home each night to read. The problem is, it's American spelling. I have a huge problem with this and mentioned it to the teacher she said that they don't have any English books for them. Also a parent friend of mine said that because this is how they are learning, when it comes to spelling the children are allowed to use American spelling I.e 'mom' instead of 'mum'.
I want to know if anyone out there can direct me toward a site where there are copies of English printable books for that level?
Also is this the norm for schools? Are they teaching different spelling?

Reading Eggs is Australian (owned by the ABC actually) and they have online books on there, all leveled. Plus, it's fun

Oh, and Libraries often have readers, too.
