I had to take a week off when I was 7 weeks pregnant because I had such bad nausea, so after day 3 I phoned my Manager to let her know why I was sick. I didn't have to but I have a great relationship with her, and I would have told her if I had miscarried so I was fine with it.
In your case, I'd either tell my manager before they went on leave and ask them not to tell anyone before you get to "announce" it.

I intend to keep it to myself as long as I possibly can. I really don't like most of my work colleagues & just don't want to share it with them. There's no maternity leave so I don't need to organise that.

How about sending her an email while she is on leave then if she checks her emails on leave thats up to her. Then if someone tells her verbally u can say that u did write to her before telling everyone else and that you didn't want to disturb her leave.
I wouldnt phone her during her leave.. she may not appreciate that..

Obviously my work place is much more relaxed!! I text my boss regularly and our fac tilt often does to his place for bbqs. I guess it really depends on your workplace - it wouldn't be weird at all for me to give a quick call to let him know.

How long is she away for - I'm assuming at least a few weeks?

I told my boss verbally when I was 9 weeks along.

I think it is good form to tell her before she hears it through others, so if that involves giving her a call while she's away then I think that's fine.

I told my boss before 12 weeks but only because it was so obvious as it was Xmas season and I wasn't drinking! And I would have told her if I had lost it, so didn't see the harm.

But you don't need to tell bang on 12 weeks so I would probably wait in your circumstances.

I think it would be a bit odd to call her while she is on leave.
Word gets around our workplace very quickly and given that I'll be nearly 18 weeks by the time she returns I'd say I will have a noticeable belly by then. There are a few b****** in our office who would take great joy in texting her to blow my news while she's away

She's away for 6 weeks. Which is a fair wack of time when it comes to a baby belly. I don't feel comfortable calling her while on holidays but DH thinks that's the better option. He doesn't want me to tell her until all the tests come back clear just in case I miscarry. But I think most of you are right in that depending on the relationship will depend on how you tell your boss

Thanks for all the advice ladies! :-)
