    Default Antibiotics for gastro?

Hi ladies, just wanting your advice on behalf of my sister. My niece went to a birthday party over the weekend and has sadly come down with gastro. My sister took her to the clinic and the dr said yes it's gastro and prescribed antibiotics because he thinks It's bacterial. I thought they would have to take a stool sample to know that? To be honest I haven't heard of this so just wanted to know what you all thought? She has taken her to a second dr who also said she thinks it's bacterial just by looking at her. She has only been sick since 5am so there hasn't been much time to see if it will run Its course.

Is prescribing antibiotics for gastro normal?

    ETA: My niece is 5

My DS had gastro recently and ended up in hospital (he's only 11mo). Paedatrician said that as his throat looked red and irritated and DS had been coughing a bit, that he may have contracted the gastro that way as a bacterial form of gastro. He said if DS didn't get better they'd prescribe AB's, but that it looked like it had mostly run its course by the time we got there.
