We bought our eldest a mini. Perfect size and not to heavy for her little hands.

I've just bought the iPad mini for each of my kids for their birthday next month. I also got the military covers. About $85 but are shock proof and water resistant. I shopped around and everyone recommended the mini. Smaller for little hands and less screen to damage.
