I think it depends on the situation and my mood when it happens. Sometimes I will comment back and other times I'll just roll my eyes and walk away.
I had an older checkout chick at Coles have a go at me about being too young to have children. I calmly said to her 'well aren't you a judgmental *****". It shocked her and stopped her rant.

I would just say 'ok' and turn and walk away. They are just inconsequential to my life, and besides, I am not a fan of public outbursts. Why bother over a stranger.

This last week I've had certain people tick me off so I have retaliated and stood up for myself, but not in an agressive manner.
You should have said "Sorry, I didn't mean to stalk but I was looking for the stupid butter and you looked like you'd know where to find it".

I think it's really unwise to retaliate, ever. Especially in this situation the man in question was clearly unhinged. You never know how crazy people are, what they are capable of. Just walk away.

Its only in certain situations when I keep my mouth shut eg. Kids around, innapropriate place. I don't yell and scream back but I just hold my tone and give them a piece of my mind back. I don't appreciate being belittled in public.
