My 12 month old has been unwell since Friday, I took her to the Dr yesterday and she was diagnosed with tonsillitis. The dr advised that she probably wouldn't want to drink much as her throat would be very sore so to frequently encourage drinks to avoid dehydration. So we've been offering water about every 10-20 minutes and she's either been refusing it or having a tiny sip. However in the last 3 hours she has been guzzling it down, in that time I think she's had about 400ml and drinks so much in each gulp that she gets out of breath. Is this normal? I thought maybe she's just starting to feel better and is catching up, but is there an issue with how much she's drinking?

Sounds like she's starting to feel a little better and feeling really hungry and catching up. Nothing wrong with it, let her drink. She might even be dehydrated so give her gastrolite in water/milk bottle or iceblocks if your worried about dehydration.
Btw has she been eating? Offer soft foods
