Default Can a faulty air-con leak gas into the house?

Does anyone know if a faulty air-conditioner could leak gas into the house? Or only outside? Is the gas harmful?

My DP was a gas fitter and said it could, but it depends on the type of air con you have. The gas can be harmful in high concentration (like in a small non ventilated room), but the gas can be easily ventilated. If your getting heart palpitations of feeling light headed, open a window or door to ventilate the room. He said if your worried he ring a specialized refrigerator gas fitter up to check it out just to be on the safe side.
