Anything could have set it off, just a power surge will do it. Not necessarily related to a particular appliance

No coffee, no iron! I'll ask the neighbors this evening if they had any problems. We've had power drop out & reconnect overnight before, but it's never tripped the switch till now.

DF wants to rig something up so that if anyone opens the box something will jump out at them, but I can already see that backfiring & me falling A over T down the steps!

You can opt to get your meter box locked through the electricity company. So only you and the meter reader can access it . Not sure what costs are involved though.

Fridge, hot water system or faulty switch. Cheapest and easiest is to get switch replaced if it happens again.

A lamp tripped our switch a couple of times. Could be anything!

Agree that the chances of anyone actually turning it off are slim to none.

It could have just been a surge which doesn't have to be tied to any particular appliance.

Chances are one of you appliances maybe something that goes on standby fired up and it tripped your safety switch. Happens now & then but if it happens regularly call your power provider.

Id suggest not rigging up anything to your meter box as pi$$ing off the meter reader isnt nice & locking it without the power company having access is illegal

Our meter box is covered & locked, just has a window for reading the meter.

I wouldn't worry about the tripped power. It happens. You'll figure out what it is if it keeps happening.
