Just in hand luggage. What are you taking? Could it be something impacted by 100ml rule?

We recently travelled and didn't realise you couldn't take drinks through customs, the kids had their drink bottles confiscated so make sure you wait until after you go through customs to buy water. We had food however and there was no problems with that

You can just tip the water out at security, no need to bin the entire water bottle.Customs don't care what food leaves the country, unless it's a liquid/gel like food which I'm guessing was the issue with the dip. I've had cheapskate friends packed fried rice in cooler bags because they didn't want to pay for a meal on the plane with no concern. The only issue is when you get to the other side, if it's prepackaged NZ won't have a problem with it and I'm guessing you'll have eaten most of it on the plane already? Just declare that you've got food in NZ and they'll tell you if there's anything you can't take in.
