I am having trouble staying awake all day.
Bit if history, I was assaulted Australia Day 2013 by my dss's girlfriend which resulted in a broken jaw and losing teeth. I now have a partial plate and it caused a lot of mental problems and self harming, insomnia, etc.
Fast forward to 4 months ago, I was diagnosed with celiac disease and my night time sleeping patterns have improved somewhat with the help if medication. The celiac also caused massive bloating (I looked heavily pregnant) and weight gain.
Ever since, I Nero a nap EVERY SINGLE DAY, sometimes up to 5 hours !!! My problem with this is that I have my 3 year old ds at home with me and he needs me to watch him - not sleep!
I went to the health food shop and they gave me liquid iron and this huge tub of protein powder.
Any ideas of how to stay awake without getting fat? Ie. will protein powder make me fatter? I swim laps in our pool every afternoon for exercise and do lots of yard work on the weekends and some walks to the park and shops with my son.
Will protein help me stay awake? Will liquid iron help? Anything else?
I know it's a long post - sorry, just at my wits end! Please help!

I'm sorry for what you have been through. Could you go and see a naturopath? They will do some blood work and put you on a specific diet to deal with the coelics and low iron. Liquid iron has been my lifesaver as an anaemic person, but will not help at all if you aren't low in iron (it will just constipated you). I would also suggest vitamin B supplements. Have you had counselling? Make sure you don't over do it on the weekends, while exercise is good for you, if you need rest then you should deal with that first and build up some strength.

Thank you - I can look into seeing a naturopath definitely.
I have had anaemia in and off my whole life so I think iron would help. Just wondering about the protein?
I woke up 2 hrs ago and struggling to stay awake already

Have you had your thyroid checked?
I would suggest seeing your GP to get your thyroid checked.

Yep I'm going to the dr tomorrow but I have had thyroid tested before and it's been fine.

What about sleep apnea? I know a friend who had Undiagnosed sleep apnea & would forever be tired despite sleeping a lot.
As for the protein, try the shakes for a while but get one low on sugar - they won't make you fat, just give you that kick start. Increase chicken, egg, green veggie intake.

I second the naturopath. I can get lethargic at times and thyroid issues. The naturopath can really help. Good luck!

Yes I agree with the naturopath too. They can analyze your blood straight away and pick up what's wrong.
Do you drink plenty of water? Mild dehydration contributes to a lot of people fatigued.
