Unfortunately there is no common sense test to pass before becoming a parent.

If there was no kid in the car the police would of been quick to charge him for opening his window and not having a secure vehicle yet they're not sure whether to charge him when he's left his child in there?!?
Wtf kind of world do we live in?

It isn't like everyone doesn't know what happens to kids and babies left in cars on a hot day, the message it loud and clear. He needs to be charged. What a twit!

If you think that's ok anywhere you're a bl00dy idiot, let alone in a heat wave in Canberra. I live here and I'm warm driving home with the aircon on of an afternoon.
This is completely different to parents forgetting about their kids. It's deliberate ignorance and he should be punished. I think we should make an example out of people who do this deliberately.
If nothing else it might bring the whole issue of kids and animals in cars forward in people's minds and maybe help a parent somewhere to not actually accidentally forget a child.

***WARNING**** this video is extremely distressing! (Not sure if the link will work, it's called 'One Decision' a child safety film)
I saw it a little while back & haven't been able to forget it. Maybe things like this need to be shown so people can realise the seriousness of the issue!?
This part of the article posted completely baffles me:
'Ambulance crews were called to 60 cases of children being locked in cars in the state's mid-January heatwave in which temperatures reached at least 40C for seven consecutive days.'
60 in Victoria alone!? So it isn't just one dud parent every now and then, surely they all don't think it's okay to leave a child in a locked car like that....??
