I'm fairly certain that they will transport you to the nearest hospital that can deal with the issues, rather than just airlifting you to Adelaide or Melbourne. Pretty sure I read somewhere that Warrnambool is a level 3 hospital, so can deal with most stuff

They will certainly try and do this. From Horsham they will sometimes send people to ballarat if there are beds available. Unfortunately if you need more than that you go melb or adel. They try and send you where you prefer but not always possible due to bed/specialist location.

Due to our bub being prem they had already booked us a place in Adelaide from Mt Gambier hospital if it was required. When we asked afterwards they told us they only fly to Adelaide never Melbourne from there.

I would imagine Mt Gambier would transfer to Adelaide as they're both under South Australia Health whereas Hamilton and Warrnambool would transfer to Melbourne as they're under Victoria Health.

I believe it gets quite expensive transferring interstate.

Yep, I'm also under the impression that they only transfer within the same state. Not that it would really matter either way, Adelaide & Melb are both about the same distance from home! I'm not really intending on having any problems either..... and would consider a home birth if my husband could cope! haha!

I have also read somewhere that Warrnambool can handle most stuff.

Without looking into things further, I feel most comfortable with the idea of Warrnambool... and generally, I also like to go with my first instinct on most things. It usually serves me well!

I have also heard that Warrnambool do not offer private maternity services, but that doesn't really bother me.... and neither does the fact they are furthest away.

I had my dating scan today and I'm 11wks+2days! Seeing a baby in there made it seem so real! Hubby was a bit stunned that it looked like a real baby! We could see its nose, chin, arms and legs.... when it stayed still enough!

Nope, the will transfer interstate as well. Especially if you are half way between 2 cities.
