Default How is this even legal?

So we have to get a cab to the airport next week with our 9 week old son and we rang up asking for one with a capsule. Apparently they don't have them because babies can just be nursed on the lap and don't need to be restrained. What the?! They said cause its a professional driver..OK...what if someone else crashes into the cab?!?
Just seems crazy to me. We are taking our car seat and fitting it in the cab ourselves.

Eta we are in townsville, not sure if this is the go all over Australia

Yep all over the country. Taxis are considered public transport so child restraints aren't needed.

You just need one adult per child.

I'm pretty sure it's a legal requirement that children under 12 months travelling in a taxi need to be in an appropriate restraint.

Children over 12 months don't need to be though.

Taxis are not legally obligated to carry one unfortunately.

When I had my ds, the lady sharing a room with me had no car to get home so the hospital organised a taxi to pick her up without needing any form of restraint!

This is the first time we've ever needed a cab with a baby so I had no idea. Just seems so dangerous to me, especially knowing the way some cabbies drive...

It's crazy, I found this out on a trip to Melbourne with my DS1.

Do people put their children in restraints on buses? (Genuine question...I don't travel on buses so not sure).

Put it this way. If taxis needed car seats then how would travellers/OS/interstate people get around with kids? Not everyone drives or has car seats.

Also most people use taxis as a once off with kids rather than daily usage.
