Hi ABH, heartburn was killing me also! All the mylantas etc made me throw up - DR prescribed me rabeprazole sodium 20mg (also cat b) 1 little tablet in the morning with my vitamins and haven't had a touch of the dreaded heartburn since!!! Amazing!!! I can even have a spicy meal now without heartburn!

I find the taste of mylanta and things like that make me feel like chucking it straight back up again!
I keep a packet of black and gold brand "fizz buttons" (cheap version of fruit tingles) around for when the heartburn strikes. A couple of those generally settles it down for me.
I've also heard the suggestion to prop yourself up with a couple of extra pillows when you go to sleep to keep your head elevated from your stomach - helps to keep all the acid where it should be if it's particularly bothering you at night.
DH and I sat down on the weekend to update our budget for 2014. After doing all the figures we were very happy to find out that all we would need to do is reduce how much we pay back on the credit card each fortnight (well above min payment still) while I'm on paid parental leave and we'll be fine. We're going to keep stashing away as much as possible before I go on leave too, so I may even get an extra month or so at home with bub before heading back to work
I also started a thread on how much newborns generally cost, which has been really interesting to see how people are saving money and those unexpected costs to watch out for. If you're interested it's here;

Arlias I'm not sure if ABH was like me but believe me I followed all the rules and remedies to assist my heartburn - no good unfortunately until that wonderful little 1 tablet a day remedy

Thanks Ngaiz, Jeannie1 and Arlais for the heartburn tips. Don't have the problem when I go to sleep. Just when I eat or drink something, but not all the time. Will ask my OB when I see her next week.
Thanks for the link on newborn costs, interesting reading.

I've had a bit of heartburn trouble over the last week, mostly when laying down in bed for the night. Last night though, I put my head on a higher pillow and had no issues - hopefully, that method continues being effective.

Wow guys! I don't really know what I want as part of my birth plan- I really think I've been avoiding thinking about that part cause it does scare me a bit- just the unknown. I might be a bit like you rtkirk, but I am thinking that maybe I should be saying I don't want that midwife!!! I'm pretty sure ill have DH and mum, we don't get along a lot of the time but I also can't imagine not letting her come for the birth of her first grandchild.

Haven't had any heartburn(touch wood) so can't help with that problem sorry ladies.
Got my gd results back. New testing scale says I do at a reading of 10. Old scale says must be 12-13. The doctors here aren't using the new scale as they believe it's too inclusive, had no problems with old scale so sticking with that. My ob talked to me for quite a while about what the new scale is and why they aren't using it. He hasn't given me bad advice yet so will go with what he says. My mum is type2 so I will just check with her tester if I feel off. My vomiting is the real concern.....

Jeannie- I asked for rabeprazole but Ob wasn't comfortable prescribing a drug that's still relatively new. It really is a good one but ranitidine seems to be working for me at 150mg/day.
Amps-I would feel even more sorry for you if you also had heartburn, I think your HG is more than enough.
Arlais-I agree, I hate the chalky texture and awful taste of Mylanta thats why I asked for more because I was chewing in them non-stop.

I've been using tums, but they really don't work very well. Before I got pregnant I was using Nexium. Does anyone know if Nexium is safe? At the moment my reflux isn't as bad as normal but enough to make it hard to sleep. I just wish I would stop with the loud random hiccups I've been having
