I'm a bit late to this conversation but IMO the staff member was the one who was out of line. People are allowed to discuss with their family members whatever they choose. If someone else and their family members disagree, that is up to them to discuss.

I cannot count how many times DS has been told that Santa isn't real and he asks me, and I tell him it's up to him what he wants to believe. It's hardly cause for upset.

    Wow!

your son was comforting his brother by reminding him of your families beliefs (actually telling him the truth )

I adore Christmas & Santa but I think I would use the words kind, comforting and an amazing brother not rude! He should never stop being a kind person & deny his beliefs just in case he offends someone.

My children are taught that everybody is different. We look differently, think differently and should all be as equally respected for that. I feel so sad that some people believe that a 5 year old should have to censor his families belief especially when using it as support to his brother.

but again that's the beauty of opinions. I'm sharing mine just as your 5 year old was sharing his. I would be very proud of him for being thoughtful towards his brother. It would be a different story if was running up to kids and telling them Santa isnt real just for the hell of it!

Holy gee! All this kafuffle over Santa.

Quite simply put i would not appreciate or tolerate anyone, anywhere at anytime telling my children off. Its not their place. And to have a go enough to frighten a poor child, its not okay!.

Jen has every right to be upset with the ladies actions as they were uncalled for. On many different subjects people will have different opinions and beliefs doesn't give you or anyone the right to confront a complete strangers over it especially a child.

Married to my soul mate, Mummy to one beautiful little girl, wishing for a little boy to complete our family.
My son doesn't receive gifts from Santa. Never has, never will. His gifts are all addressed to him from us (mummy, daddy, nanna, poppy, ouma, pa, etc)

    Nothing from Santa.

Shop attendant was way out of line.

For all she knew you were Jewish. I also think it's none of her business and wasn't her position to butt in.

I love how a 5 yr old is denied his rights by not being able to have freedom of speech....

Isn't that what many countries have fought for?

It's ok for adults to tell each other that God doesn't exist (which is what Christmas is about for Christians) but not ok for a child to say Santa doesn't exist? (Usually by atheists who don't believe in God but still celebrate Christmas)

Seems a bit mixed up to me.

Just making my point, will bow out now as I know I'll get flamed and I can't be bothered arguing over it.

Wowsers. It's not right to tell kids the truth about Santa when in actual fact telling kids he is real is a lie....I don't have an issue with people doing sant and my kids respect that too but, hmmmmm, I really don't know what to say to this. Santa *is* made up.

Oh, and back to the op, the shop assistant was totally out of
    Line, not your son.
