Default Public or Private Hospital in South Eastern Victoria

    Hi All,

Not sure if anyone has ever experienced the same as I do in deciding which hospitals to go to. I have private insurance which eligible only on or after 14th May 2014 and my due date is 20th May 2014. I can decide to go public or private but for public hospital, I have to go Dandenong Hospital which I might not feel comfortable with. While with private, of course the service will be better and I wish to go private. I do not mind to pay for private ob but to pay another 5-8K for private hospital if the baby comes early before 14th May, I will be a bit hesitate.
Anyone can give me your input and it will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Congratulations.

My friend had her first baby at Dandenong (few years ago). I never asked in detail but I think she didn't have a good exp. I don't know if it was all due to hospital or her very long labour. Monash Clayton is of course top hospital if you can get in.

Your dates are on border, so hard to suggest. I have PHI but I am still going as public to save costs which I can use for other things. But yes like you, I wasn't comfortable with my local public hospital and decided to go fully private but when I was accepted at a tertiary level hospital as public, I switched. I have heard good and bad both about the hospital. Down the track if required I can try to switch to private (if still available).

I also feel like exp can vary (public or private), so if you don't want to put yourself in a situation where your baby may come a bit early and then you would need to bear all private hospital costs then seems like Dandenong is your only choise unless you can try to get in to other public hospital you would prefer. You can also try to go for GP Shared Care option who can look after you during your antenatal period. You would also have another option of seeing a private OB along with your shared care GP if you need (I think with this option OB will charge only a small for consultation which doesn't include delivery).

PM me and I will tell you about other forums where you may get some idea from someone who had same situation like you. I find users on few other forums more active and responsive.

    All the best.

    Thanks Idina.
I think my OB can only go Monash public and private hospitals surroundings. I have no options to choose other public hospital as my OB wouldn't be able to attend. Furthermore, I would also concern about the distance of the other hospital and place I lived. I did requested for Monash Clayton but now, they can only go according to the postcode where I live. Thus, I am admitted to Dandenong hospital.

Can you give me the links of other forum that might have someone had similar situation as I am?

    Thanks...

OP, double check with your PHI but I'm fairly certain that most will still pay if the baby is born before the period you're eligible, as long as the EDD is afterwards. I think you need a letter from an on and another medical practitioner to send to them (like a GP or sonographer) but from what I understand, most will still pay out given the EDD is supposed to be accurate.

Check out Mark Tarrent- he has delivered my first 3 and had admitting rights to Casey and Dandenong as well as St John of God. Casey are also increasing their acuity acceptance so you may be able to go there

This is what we were told (we are with medibank) - my DD was due about a week after our waiting period was up

    thanks all.
I think I need to call Medibank private to double check with them again. I did called them and ask regarding the cover but they insisted that the baby must be delivered within the cover period but if the baby came premature or pre-term, I will not be covered.
