There's a couple of other threads recently started which may help a little both grocery/food related

And the worrying thing is I'm pretty stingy as it is.

And it's day to day living expenses that kill me. This week I got gas, electricity and phone bill all at once. $1000 worth and seriously seems like I only just paid the last lot

I used to be chronically stressed about this. The best thing we ever did was draw up a budget.

First we made a category for every kind of spending (incl savings here too, even if small).
    Ours goes:
    Mortgage
    Saving
    Giving
    Household exp
    Groceries
    Kinder/School
    Bills
    Home Maint
    Petrol
    Car Servicing
    Presents
    Clothes Kids
    Clothes DH
    Clothes me
    Spending money DH
    Spending money me
    Holidays
    Misc.

Then work out your base line pay. It may be the same every fortnight or it might vary. If it varies go with the lowest usual pay. You can always decide where to allocate extras as they come in, but it's better to plan for less.

Now start with the fixed expenses like mortgage/rent payments.

Then divide remaining $$ amongst the remaining categories.

In our case, some categories are very, very small. But at least we have something to go towards them and we make do.

Once that is all done, draw up a spreadsheet or use a book depending which method you prefer and record the money as it comes in against each category and again as it goes out.

At any given time you can look at your budget and see how you are progressing. It is sometimes necessary to adjust things as you go along, but it is very useful for us. If there is no money left in that category, then you wait for the next pay etc - regardless of what your overall bank balance is. This ensures you aren't spending money that really belongs to rates or school fees or whatever!

This probably seems tedious, but it's not as much work as it seems and it has helped us soooo much. We are finally getting some savings building up, which is much needed for things like resealing the roof etc. There is no way we would have been able to do that without a strict budget.

Sorry to blab on so much!
