What do they actually do and is it painful?

I found it uncomfortable but it was more like an internal cause midwife couldn't do it

My experience is if your body isn't ready it won't work. Had three with my son, all when more than a week overdue but none of them put me into labour. Bub wasn't ready yet.
With my daughter I also had three when a week or more overdue, but each time they were done my cervix was softer and thinner than the last and the final, very strong one (done by Ob rather than my midwife) put me into labour a day later. It was really painful but did the trick. My body was ready for it this time.

Yes I herd if ur not dialtated or soft and thinning it won't really work so ur less favorable but the more births u have vaginally the more chance u will be dialated and it may work everyone is different that's good hearing everyone's stories cause its so interesting on how it will happen for me
