Does anyone have any ideas how I can increase my upper-body strength when I have on-going chronic pain issues with my neck (I believe it's muscular)?
I've tried personal training but the problem is that I often can't tell if I'm hurting my neck until the next day. Therefore I find it really hard to excercise.

I would try a sports physio. They will be able to assess your neck, treat it, recommend specific exercises for you and monitor your technique so you don't do any further damage.
