I think he's lucky to be eating at all. If it was up to me, he'd be thrown in a pit with snakes and tarantulas and left there to be cold, alone and miserable for the rest of his life.

Compensation? No. But should have he been provided with halal meals? Yes.

So from this he actually got halal meals, just none with meat? His religion was respected but should the governments money be expected to stretch to two types of meat when there is an alternative?
If HE was respecting his religion in the first place he wouldn't be there!

The article doesn't address any concern about how these were prepared...it focuses on halal meat.
So basically he wanted meat - and the jail said they didn't have halal meat.
WHat if they sourced halal meat - but they had an inmate who was against the cruel practise of preparing [killing] said halal meat...would the jail have to provide specialised meals for all? and have separate prep areas?

No. He got vegetarian food, he wasn't forced to eat pork! So his requirement was catered for, he's just got the sh!ts that he didn't get meat for however long.

Screw his religious beliefs, I don't think the horrible crime he committed to get in their wouldv been part of his religion so why should the mongrel get special meat?? Therefor no he should not get compensated for it!! Eat it or starve!!

After reading about the case, I think he was lucky to be fed at all. Filthy pig.

I think that, so long as adequate alternative food is provided, then no special requirements need to be accommodated. So in this example, he needs to suck it up - he got enough food and wasn't forced to eat non-halal food.
If however, the main part of the meal was against someone's religious beliefs and no alternatives were provided then that's a problem. So for example if they were served a big piece of pork and nothing else, then I would consider that to be a fairly sh!tty thing to do. But, if there were sufficient veggies or bread with it, then just eat those and leave the pork mate!

I believe they should if they have a moral/religious objection to a certain food. Which is exactly what happened. He was provided halal food.
