Smile Any Book keepers/ Accountants around...?

I am looking to change my job due to health issues and needing to work from home.

I am looking into book keeping or accounting as a contractor but not completely sure where to start so would love any advice or tips you can offer.

I wouldn't be able to attend classes in person as I work part time away from home and have a toddler that I cant go into daycare more than he is already.

    TIA!

Distance education options are widely available through TAFE and Uni. I guess it just depends on what path you want to take?

Hi Miss, i do the bookkeeping for my husbands business. MYOB is pretty straight forward.
I did a community college course (every Saturday for a few weeks, can't remember how many) and it didn't cost much.
I have to say I was resistant to starting it but its not hard. Really just data entry if you use MYOB and then emailing the invoices to clients.
Feel free to ask me any questions if you like. I'm not an expert but I've got the hang of it pretty quickly.

Oh yeah, i forgot! I did the distance Ed one through TAFE as well. If you are motivated it might work for you but I found it easier to go to a class for asking questions and picking up on mistakes quicker.

HarvestMoon - I read that to be legally qualified as a contract book keeper I have to have worked or studied under a Tax Agent. Would Tafe count? and Do you know what Uni's offer book keeping?

I have looked into the Bookkeepers Inst of Aus and looks ok but expensive.

BubblesK - Even weekend classes wouldn't be an option for me Did you do anything else besides the community course?

You can study the cert IV in accounting through tafe but you will still have to gain the hours of experience.
I don't think Uni offers bookkeeping but do have degrees in accounting.

I'm fairly sure you can do online MYOB courses directly through MYOB. That would make you a qualified MYOB specialist.

Thanks for your advice ladies, I think my best option is to study through the Bookkeepers Asc of Aus.

Has anyone studied with them before?

I need $1000 payment to start the course so want to know before I commit!

Yikes! Have you looked into TAFE? It's probably a much cheaper option.
