    Default Compulsive Liar.

Can someone explain why some people compulsively lie? I just don't understand. Especially when literally everything they say is a load of crap. Not only do they tell you one story or brag about something really stupid, they go tell other sets of friends we are friends with completely different versions of the same stories all the time.. I DON'T GET IT.!! What are they trying to prove??

EG: ''we are completely mortgage free, ahhh so great owing nothing on your house''... then 2 weeks later he has forgotten what he has said and comes out with ''it sux having a mortgage, our monthly repayments on all our bills including mortgage is nearly $6000'"..

So weird, I'd just say "Didn't you say you were mortgage free last week?" - check them on it, although sometimes it's a bit embarrassing to have to call people out on their bull $hit.

For some people it comes down to self esteem issues. They're not happy within themselves so they make up stories to a) make themselves feel better and b) to get some sort of reinforcement from others.

I would, but they do the same kind of thing all the time.. the husbands (mine and the friend) both work in the same trade, and if for eg: they are talking about how much a job cost that they did... and my hubby said he did it for $5000, he will automatically say he did a cash job for $250 000.00.. (yeah right, cos ANYBODY will pay that much money with cash..) it's so ridiculously stupid it's not funny.

we are in no competition with them, but they seem to really want to one up us for anything and everything.. but then a month later the wife will say they can't afford to send their son to a private school cos they ''really need that $2000""..

same as when we buy a car.. even if they have a new one or newish under 2 years old newish, they buy another one too with the comment ''but this is a Honda''... um big woop. who mentioned anything about brands?!

Or even once when the hubby's were at work and the other one said loudly enough in front of my hubby ''oh that's great darl, you got a payrise of $8000, let's celebrate''.... I dunno who would even say that out aloud.. if I got a payrise, and rung hubby he wouldn't repeat out loud what I have just said... he'd just say ''that's great babe, awesome''... and we'd talk about it when he gets home.. there's no way i'd say to him I got a payrise and he'd repeat after me'' you got a payrise of xxx amount!!""..

    aargh.

It's so frustrating when people think it's ok to compulsively lie! I not only think its rude and insulting but wonder if these people have an illness?
I have a family member who is a compulsive liar and now his wife is starting to do the exact same thing so I make sure they are both in the same room and say 'oh but you said this' they both squirm and try cover it up.

Yeah I don't get it but lately no matter what subject we talk about they spin it around to talk about something $$ wise. we were talking about holidays at X Mas and then suddenly the other friend piped up.. ''oh we are going to the Gold Coast and are staying at xx resort but we were given the penthouse for $2000 for 12 days..''.. yeah whatever, and i'll believe that one too. I wasn't born yesterday and do they really think we are that stupid to believe that a 5 star resort will give you a 3 bedroom penthouse on a pretty new resort between X Mas and past new years eve?? If anything, places hike the price right up.. Honestly it's beginning to give me the sh#ts. Can't we seriously have a conversation without the bull? What makes it worse is that they will look you right in the eye with a serious face.. I felt like screaming at them that I don't give a rats how much they have supposedly paid... WHO CARES!!!!!!!! but I know that they are the type that if you do pull them up on it (and other friends have before) they just cut the friendship dead.

Urgh really awful, awful! Tell them they have caught affluenza and either call them out on it or limit your time with them, affluenza catches and you don't want to be drawn into the crap.

Next time they brag, just a quick "your shout then" with a big grin or even saying flat out "you talk about money a lot don't you".

At the rate you've described I probably couldn't hold my tongue.

I just did!! wow... certainly describes them a bit.. lol. they once told my dh to treat his employees like ''dogs''.. and dh said ''why the heck would I do that?!'' and the reply :: ''you are too nice to them... treat them mean keep them keen''... um no. we value our employees thank you very much.. I don't understand why anybody would treat anyone like a dog. just bizarre train of thought.

It's hard to cull them as friends because we are connected in a family way.
