My girlfriends are taking me out to dinner for my birthday in a few weeks and I'm meant to pick a restaurant. I haven't been out for dinner anywhere 'nice' for at least a year! Where is new and good? Must take bookings, and would prefer somewhere inner north/west or CBD
(posting this is rather depressing, pre kids we used to be the first at the door at any new restaurant )

Not sure how much you want to spend but I just took DH to Estelle in Northcote for his birthday and that was great. He took me to Coda in the CBD for mine and I LOVED it. We went to Gingerboy for our anniversary and that was yum as well. It's so hard to choose in Melbourne, there's so many amazing options! I think Estelle is a little cheaper than the other two.
Mamasitas is another yummy option and not too pricey. Movida's always a winner. The list goes on!!!

St Katherine's in Kew - my friends and I had a great girl's dinner out there about a month ago and I'm hoping to go back and do it again soon! Think relaxed but cool wait staff, nice range of sharing plates, interesting twists on regular food with different exotic flavors (they do their own version of KFC... comes out in a bucket and everything), yummy cocktails AND amazing deserts! Oh and it wasn't that expensive, they actually gave us 2 complimentary plates of food but I'm not sure if this is standard!

2 fancier suggestions that are both in the CBD: Kenzan (if you like Japanese) or The Italian (... you can guess the cuisine there)

I am not from Melbourne, although I love the food over there. Just wanted to say what nice friends you must have!

Omg you MUST go to Maha! Don't try and order dishes just let the waiters order for you. One of the most incredible dining experiences if my life and I tried a lot of delicious food I wouldn't have ordered under normal circumstances! It's middle eastern cuisine and is in bond street
