And then, the film clip doesn't really make sense with your interpretation either? Why would she have it full of Carey and Willow?

04-07-2013 12:42 #102The song "True Love" by Pink is one of the songs on her "The Truth About Love" album which debuted in September of 2012. This song is co-sung with Lily Rose Cooper on the album yet written by Pink and reflects her feelings for her husband Carey Hart. After being in a relationship with Hart for 10 years she now realizes that despite his faults she still loves him. The lyrics state "You're an ******* but I love you and you make me so mad I ask myself why I'm still here, where could I go, you're the only love I've ever known. But I hate you; I really hate you so much I think it must be true love"The meaning behind these lyrics are easy to relate to for anyone who has been in a long term relationship with someone that is not perfect, yet despite their flaws you still love everything about them. Although no relationship is perfect Pink has decided to stick it out with her husband Carey Hart and this is reflected throughout the lyrics of "True Love." No relationship is ever going to be perfect, and even though it is not that doesn't mean that it is not true love, it just means that everyone is human and we all have our bad habits that may get on the nerves of our significant other at times.

I think it actually sets a really good example of a GOOD relationship. after being with someone 10 years you DO hate things about them. at times every thing they say really does give you the sh!ts and some times you really could just slap them in the face. I think its brutal and its an honest interpretation of a realistic relationship and it shows they both have guts to work on it rather than run away from it.
Relationships are hard and just because you 'hate' someone it doesnt mean you dont love them and it doesnt mean its wrong. Relationships dont always need to be painted in a perfect light

While I think Jaq's interpretation is interesting, I don't agree at all that this is a pro-woman song. I actually think it is a pretty long bow to draw to suggest that it is, given the film clip and language. If you have to fall back on the 'cultural relativism' angle to defend the language in a main****** song, you have lost me. I also think Annabella's point about the violent sexual imagery very strongly undermines a feminst interpretion of the song.
I have a problem with the interpretation of our highly sexualised pop culture as being empowering for women by enabeling them to express their sexuality. I see a lot of emphasis placed on the importance for women to be proud sexual beings, but not a whole lot of emphasis on a woman's choice as to how much of a sexual being she wants to be. It seems that this culture is saying that if you dress sexy (so long as you have the 'right' body to do so), and are overt with your sexual desires then you are an empowered woman. But, if you aren't really into sex all that much, then you are somhow oppressed. This is an awful message for young people to be getting. There is already enough pressure on them to become sexually active, we don't need to start telling them that they are oppressed if they don't want it.

thanks so much for all if your thoughts and comments on this thread. It has been interesting to hear everyone's opinions. Just to clarify, the term 'rapey' was coined by an article in the UK and then was quoted by an Australian journalist. The original topic was not suggesting that but that keeps being thrown around after someone mentioned it.
My original intention was to bring to light the fact that our culture doesn't seem to be changing in regards to men speaking to and about women (and obviously women speaking about women) That, in my opinion, the degrading nature if these type of songs are accepted in pop culture because it is 'art' or because it has a good beat or because it's freedom on speach.
For those of you who may have missed it, Thicke has admitted to intentionally degrading women. His reasoning behind this is obsured.
Just because a female singer writes songs in the same way, doesn't make it right. Just because a female director made the film clip doesn't make it right either. You can take the lyrics and the film clip however you like, it is sexist because that's how he wanted it.
Only Thicke himself will know the meaning behind his reference to "blurred lines".
At the end of the day, it's just a song but personally I'd rather my music have real substance. You can be thought provoking without being degrading.

I think its good to remember Wikipedia is unconfirmed articles written by normal people and its best to be taken with a grain of salt. His so called statement screams sarcasm and giving a stupid answer to a stupid question

I dunno about anyone else, but how a song sounds matters so much more to me than what it means. A good meaning behind a song I find appealing to the ear is a great bonus - but a song about something meaningful means little to me if it sounds like rubbish.
Not that I think this song is great... but I will admit that one of his older songs, from like YEARS AND YEARS ago (When I get you Alone) is a regular in my car...
