Wow, people actually care enough about other people's shopping to comment on the total? Who are these people?
The only time I ever notice what is going on with the person in front of me at the grocery line is when I realise they have something that I forgot to grab. As in "Dang! I forgot the corn! "
Even that is pretty rare, I'm usually trying to mediate between a demanding toddler and an argumentative preschooler. Your shopping bill could hit $1000 and I would notice nothing.

I would never comment on how much someone's shopping cost! I don't think I've ever even heard how much someone else's shopping is.
I'd hate to see what people would have said about my mums shopping when I was growing up. At least $350 a week!

WTF! Seriously such a dumb thing to comment on. You could be buying groceries for a school, kids camp, community centre - actually it doesn't effing matter because it's nothing to do with anybody. Next time tell her to step off! Nicely of course, we never know who we're actually dealing with

No, I wouldnt notice. im always too busy trying to keep both my toddlers in the trolley, make sure the checkout operater isnt packing my meat with the veggies (pet hate) and usually scanning hands, bags and trolley to make sure my kids haven't "accidentally" added an item they shouldn't. It sure is stressful shopping with 2 toddlers.

I would never comment.
I keep to myself and avoid idle chit chat with randoms like the plague!
I would be annoyed if someone remarked how much I spent. It's rude and nosey.

I have only had it happen a few times, normally they have to say something about shopping with all my kids. When they have it depends on my mood, if i am cranky I have been know to say "I suppose you think you could feed a family of 8 and a family of 3 adults for less. Go right ahead". I shop for us and my parents. or simply a "yeah what of it"
Hmm I can be a B*Tch some times.
When I am in a good mood, I go with "yes I did so well today $500 under budget, I rock"
I never notice anyone else food or bill, I am to busy watching my lot, making sure ds3 is jumping out of trolley

I'd just tell them that once they start earning the money to pay for my groceries then they can comment .

I seriously have never paid enough attention to other shoppers to notice how much their bill is!
OP next time i'd say "wow, you really don't have any manners do you?"

No, Im usually too busy "people watching" and enjoying the look of rage and impatience on other peoples faces while lining up......OR Im too busy thinking "should I grab another box of cookies? Hmm, how far away is the cookie ailse? Can I make it there and back? Oooo look, counter chocolates!"

I have only commented on the contents of someone's trolley once....and that was to thank them. The person was covered in filth and was buying up on bottled water and other drinks and I figured it was a fairly safe bet this person was one of the 'Mud Army' who volunteered to clean up after the Brisbane 2011 floods.
Just so rude to judge how much someone spends.
