    Exactly!

It doesn't. But I find it amazing that they manage to have lots of money, but conveniently 'lose' their identification papers.

Can you explain the rapid increase in numbers that we have seen over the last 2 years? Push or pull factors?

Having access to financial resources does not mean that one does not face persecution in their own country. In fact I would suggest that some of the people who are targetted are people of means who may have had some influence int their own country and attracted the wrath of their government.

How much money they have has absolutely nothing to do with their status as a genuine refugee. These people are wanting to get out of life and death situations fast. They don't have YEARS to wait for visa applications to be approved.

I can tell you now that if my family were in danger of being killed because of war or famine then I would do anything to get them out of that situation.

So they have money but no forms of identification? Why?

Just because people have money, doesn't make them any less persecuted???

SBS did a great show called "go back to where you came from" -- two series actually.
They addressed quite a few times the whole "oh they have money but no documents they must not be 'genuine' refugees" thing.

Am sure plenty of people have heard of it not sure how many actually watched it through empathetic eyes.

Umm, burnt with their homes, lost in transit, held in locations that would put them at serious risk to access.....so many possibilities.

Have you watch "Go back to where you come from"? It's all explained by several of the refugees they speak to.

Can anyone explain the massive increase in numbers? What has changed in the world in the last couple of years to cause this?

I would suggest it is due to 'pull' factors of this government's failed policies.
