We have one at the top and the bottom. We've never tripped - we are super careful especially when carrying DS. I'd rather the gate and a small risk of us tripping than a huge risk of DS falling down the stairs especially since our stairs are wooden with a wall at the bottom. Ouch

You need to get a special 'top of the stairs' one. We got one from target that you screw into the wall and there is no bottom rail. We paid about $70 when it was on special.

We have a special gate for the top of the stairs, no bars it's thick plastic mess & rolls out & clicks in.
No way of climbing over or tripping...

We have a 'gate' that my hubby actually built.
It is a solid timber door cut to height of the stairs posts (our stairs are straight up/down).
He then used the brackets & latch you generally see on pool gates that are self closing & our toddler can not reach to open.
