Default *WARNING* - possibly distressing - gender selection and abortion

Ladies this thread involves discussion on abortion. Do not read any further if this is a topic that upsets you.

What do you all think about a suggestion raised in this article... that gender not be revealed to parents until it is too late for an abortion?
    (Unless for medical reasons).

I had trouble reading the article. But the title upset me, I'm not against abortion for medical reasons, but for lifestyle and gender selection reasons I am against it.

I don't think that parents should be able to abort a baby purely on the fact that the baby wasn't the gender that they want. I don't agree with not telling them until its too late for an abortion.

I think it would be 0.0001% of the population, not an everyday thing. But I must admit I do hope any couples that do this suffer infertility and are unable to fall pregnant again. Or if they get the boy they want he is girlie and gay.

I can't read the article (so don't know all the details) but can I say that is absolutely appalling - these people do not deserve to have a children, with such disregard for human life. How any woman in a first world country (not being forced) could make that decision - just because of sex (if that is in fact the only criteria) is beyond me. God help them both, because they will have to live with the consequences.

Ps: title should be sex selection (based on anatomy/chromosomes) gender is a social construct 😊

I don't think the gender should be kept secret from the parents.

But i think its sad someone would terminate just based on gender...there are so many people out there who would give anything to get pregnant and have a healthy baby of either gender...

I am unequivocally pro choice so I while I may not understand how someone could be so against having a particular sex that they would have a late term abortion, I support the right for them to do so. Not making the sex available until it is too late for a legal abortion may do more harm than good.

I am also pro choice - don't get me wrong, but I also believe you should never harm anyone else without a justifiable reason - I cant (and dont see how anyone could) justify an abortion based on just sex at such a late stage, it is immoral and irresponsible (on all parties accounts parents and doctors) - don't want a girl - don't take the chance. There are better was to go about sex selection other than aborting the 'wrong' sex - particularly at 19 weeks, keep in mind this is just a few weeks off viability and a week earlier than the requirements of a certified birth.

If you want one sex so bad, go through IVF and sex selection.

If there are such compelling reasons as to why one person should have one sex over another (ie: mental health) then they should be questioning whether children are a good idea - period.

I think it is appalling that parents would terminate a pregnancy based solely on the babies gender. That makes me sick. They do not deserve to be parents and reading this makes me feel so extremely sorry for all of the couples with fertility issues who want nothing more than a healthy baby in their arms.

Abortion based on gender alone should be illegal.
