Default Assessing / Diagnosing for ASD v Paediatrician using Medicare item 135

    Hi,
I'm after some advise. I'm in the process of assessing my DD who's 2 for autism. We saw her paediatrician last month and he gave us 2 referrals to see a psychologist and a speech therapist. On these referrals he wrote down "I assessed her with Medicare item 135"???!!! The number "135" means already "Treatment" if you have a child with autism and your child can access 20 sessions of treatment...So my question is to you mums - Have you ever had a situation like mine when your child's paediatrician said "Yes, she /he has ASD" and he used a Medicare item 135 but at the same time he wanted your child to be assessed by other specialists eg. psychologist, speech therapist???
I live in Western Sydney, NSW...
    Thank you all!!!

    According to this website: http://www.health.gov.au/internet/ma...utism-children

Medicare item 135 is " Medicare items are available for assessment, diagnosis and the creation of a treatment and management plan by a consultant paediatrician (MBS item 135) or a psychiatrist (MBS item 289) for a child aged under 13 years. "

So, I think, your paed has done it correctly, seeing he put it as item 135 because the paed acts as the creator of a treatment and management plan. And Medicare item 135 is part of 'Helping Children with Autism' package, which gives 20 rebated sessions per lifetime. Once your child has been diagnosed, you will have access to Fahcsia funding, and there are other Medicare rebates available (CDMP, Mental Health Plan).

Thank you europa for your reply!
I'm still not sure if what he used is correct. From what I understand he should've used item 110-131 for the assessment purposes. This would allow DD to access 4 assessment sessions with ST, OT, psychologist partially covered by Medicare and then we would have to come back to the paediatrician so he could use item 135 for creating a treatment and management plan...Will have to ring him and ask...
    Thanks again!
