    Default Nap/sleep issue...

DD is 10 months. Lately she's been a big challenge to get to sleep at night. She goes to bed quite happily and chats away for ages but its almost like she gets frustrated after a while and then can't put herself to sleep and starts crying. Once she gets upset, it's like she has lost the ability to go to sleep. We have to rock her as anything else doesn't work. And this sometimes takes over an hour as she keeps waking when we put her down. If I put her down awake, she either hysterically cries or the whole cycle begins again. Yesterday she was with my Mum and she did two naps of 2 hrs and 2.5 hours and woke at 5 from her last one. Normally she might do two 1.5 hr naps though. I'm thinking this is too late but some days she is not ready for her second nap till 3pm so do I wake her if she does a long one or not let her nap at all? Last night she eventually went to sleep at 10.15 and woke for the day at 6.30! I know there are worse sleepers out there but DH and I are pretty tired at night and are really missing our wind down time! Any suggestions?

Definitely don't let her sleep too late in the arvo. If I put DS down at three, I usually wake him at 4.15, otherwise he won't put himself to sleep at 7.

My DD did the same at that age, I use to skip the afternoon sleep at 3pm and start our bedtime routine. She was grumpy but we did a walk, dinner, bath, play, boob then cuddles. It was tough but it meant she was sound asleep by 6pm. Over about a month she adjusted her day sleeps herself so she isn't as grumpy in the afternoon but it is still tough to keep her happy until 6pm, worth it though!

Thanks ladies... That's what I thought. The confusing thing is that I know she's tired at night too as she's rubbing her eyes a lot, crying when we put her pjs on but she gets into bed and its like she has a second wind.

Yep, they do get a second wind when they are overtired, I would be aiming for a really early bedtime. Best of luck.
